Springtime in Texas is a small window of the perfect weather. It’s not too hot and humid yet to really enjoy the outdoors. This is when we all head outside looking for the best spring activities. We’ve put together some of the best options within a short drive of downtown Decatur, TX.

4 Spring Activities You Can Drive to Near Decatur, TX

1. Clear Lake LBJ Grasslands

If you’re looking to hike, kayak, or for a space to explore with your horses, the LBJ National Grasslands is the place to go. Most people will drive about 19 miles to The Caddo and Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands. However, you can head about nine miles out of downtown to Clear Lake at Fs 928 5 and avoid the crowds.

Clear Lake is a great place to bring kayaks. There’s a dock that makes it easy to get in and out. Alternatively, this is a great spot for fishing this spring.

2. Nock It Archery Center

If you’re looking to take up a new sport this spring, consider archery. The training center is located just eight miles out of town at 2502 Co Rd 4421 in Rhome. They have both private and group classes. This is great if you want to train up or just have a little fun with something new.

3. CARE Tiger Sanctuary

With the moderate weather putting everyone in a good mood, it’s time to pile the family into your new Ford Escape SE. Hook up the Bluetooth audio connection, put on great music, and head on over to Bridgeport for an afternoon outside. The sanctuary is located at 245 Co Rd 3422.

There are over 50 different animals at this sanctuary, including bobcats, cougars, tigers, and a tortoise. You’ll want to visit as part of a tour. These happen on the weekends at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM. They last 90 minutes.

4. NRS Event Center

The NRS Event Center is a great place to get outside on a spring day. Their events calendar includes activities like team roping, barrel races, and more. You can come to watch, or alternatively, you can learn some new skills. They have classes for team roping and horsemanship.

The center also does tours of the ranch. They call this their Ride the Ranch program. These tours can be one hour or an entire weekend of horseback riding around the space. The NRS Event Center is on the edge of town at 309 Cr 4228.
